Weighty Matter

20 Kgs is not very much for 6 months worth of stuff.  The fly remembers travelling sometime (long) in the past, when the only mode of communication was the weekly areogram home, and incoming mail was collected from the Poste Restante in capital cities. Now communication modes mean at least half a dozen devices with their requisite cords and chargers - a considerable contribution to the weight allocation. It may be necessary to sacrifice a couple of pairs of shoes!  Or maybe wear three coats onto the plane.
The one-size-fits-all weight allocation is irritating.  Especially when  a smaller person (a fly for example) is seated on the plane next to a much larger person, who not only does not pay for excess (personal) baggage, but can even overflow into the fly's seat.  Once in the past, Flyspring No 3 was charged for her excess baggage (10 kgs - 640 euros) by an  airline (no names)  when she herself weighed only 40 kgs.
The fly has actually flown with an airline, in the Pacific, where all passengers were weighed along with their luggage.   It is OK to take the trouble to do this when even weight distribution on the aircraft is the critical factor, but not worth the effort to give passengers an equitable experience.  It would not be hard to devise a table of personal weight for luggage weight allowances.  I wonder why they don't try it.
