Day  9 Friday 9th August

The Mission

The Mission area is the site of the original Mission settlement in San Francisco.  In 1776, the Mission of Saint Francis of Assisi was founded in 1776 and is today the oldest intact mission in California and the oldest building in San Francisco. And of course it gives its name to the Mission District.  The white adobe church  now stands beside a giant basilica, and just down the road from the first Women’s  Community centre.

The ceiling timbers are redwood, lashed together with rawhide and decorated in Indian colours.
