Day 4  Monday August  5th
Tired legs tonight.  Many miles (they still have them here) walked, and many more cycled.  Golden Gate Park is huge – larger than New York’s Central Park, more than 1000 acres.  Lots of roads for cars, and also bike and people pathways.  Lots of people everywhere.  Wonderful native vegetation, not a classical English-style park – the deliberate intention of the designer.

The cycle paths take you all the way down to Ocean Beach, unfortunately a bit bleak today.  It was cold – San Francisco has its own micro-climate, with very cold winds.  The fogs come and go, the hills of the city disappear and reappear several times in a day.

Curry in the Park at 5pm – first meal of the day.  Our appetites, as well as sleep patterns, are still not in order.  Good curry though.

Walked back down to Haight Street¸and of course the Haight Ashbury intersection.  The clock is stopped at 4.20 out of deference to international bong hit time.  This was the epicentre of the psychedelic 60s apparently.  I don’t remember, but they do say that if you remember, you weren’t there.

Haight is still a richly colourful street,  the anarchist bookshop still thrives and various buildings are proud to announce that Janis Joplin once lived there.  She had trouble holding on to her digs .True to form, Soph bought some goods at a vintage shop.  There is a most marvellous 60s clothes place, Annabelle Crabb would be in heaven.

Sophie would not let my buy this outfit.

Thought I would not try this shop

I am trying to make my pictures stay the right way up.  But I think it is some deep-seated lack of accord between Apple (photos taken on iPhone) and Windows on my laptop.  Sorry!
